Since I have arrived in Lisbon, I have been taking Portuguese class every week. Recently, my teacher asked me to write about (in Portuguese of course) why I practice Scaravelli inspired Yoga. Many corrections, changes and additions of all the right conjunctions later (thanks to my very patient teacher), this little article was the result...
So now, I guess, I should also translate this back into English…
Vanda Scaravelli was a yogini from Italy who was never in favour of organisation. She was very clear that any form of organisation hinders the liberation of our body and therefore she never wanted her way of working to become a ‘method’ as such. For her it was more about the journey.
This way of working with the body enabled me to change and improve my posture significantly. In fact, my whole body finds itself much more in a state of balance as a result of this form of Yoga.
One of its benefits is that it helps us re-educate our nervous system and to develop a much deeper level of awareness of our body. And I am not referring to the more esoteric meaning of the word ‘awareness’. It’s actually a real neurological process, making it possible to feel every smallest part of the body and to re-programme it.
As I am really curious about how all the connections in the body work, whether physically or emotionally, Scaravelli inspired Yoga keeps presenting me with the most fascinating discoveries about the human body.
It’s certainly not an easy journey, but an extremely fulfilling one.
So this is as far as I got in Portuguese, but I could easily go on forever about this Yoga. Had I written this in English, I would have talked about how beauty and poetry are the heart of Scaravelli inspired Yoga, how it's about playing and exploring with an open mind, how powerful it is in breaking down habitual holding patterns, how it invites free and effortless movement, how it connects you to Mother Earth and Father Sky. As I said, I could go on forever. I will have a go (with the help of my Portuguese teacher of course), but you may have to wait a little for the next instalment ;)
How can you experience Scaravelli inspired Yoga for yourself?
Every Wednesday, 13h-14h and 18h30-19h45 at Little Yoga Space (sign up here).
Or watch out for Yoga Immersions with Kat. Next one coming up on Saturday 19th November.
