Breaking unsustainable patterns in our psychological and physiological self - Somatic Training for Yoga, Healthcare and Social Service Professionals
This course, while focusing on teaching methods for yoga instructors, healthcare and social service professionals, is open to anyone who is interested in gaining insight into understanding more about complex anxiety, PTSD, community building, mind-body connection and wellbeing, emotional and addictive patterns, non violent solutions, mental and biological resiliency and somatic resolution.
Through a better understanding of the body and how it is affected during certain circumstances and events (mentally, physically and emotionally), we as humans are able to ultimately return ourselves back to a balanced state of living, thus breaking the pattern of stress, anxiety, and eventually trauma within ourselves, our community and our globe.
Drawing from science, movement study, bodywork and yoga philosophy, Kirsten, Tiago and Katrin will bring together the depth and vast extent of their experiences as teachers and therapists to offer a unique insight into working with a trauma informed approach.
As humans we are exposed to circumstances in our lives that greatly affect our biological patterns, brain development, inter relational responses, and overall physiological wellbeing. Some of these events naturally occur in this world, beyond the scope of our control (ie natural disasters, death of a loved one, accidents, etc). And some are events that have been the result of manmade complications (ie war, assault, poverty, discrimination, etc). As our bodies individually internalise these life happenings, there is strong evidence that suggests that unresolved energy can greatly alter our biological ability to self regulate, thus compromising our immune system, neurological pathways, heart rate, blood pressure, cognitive function, digestion, ability to deal with pain, relationships and emotional responses. There is even evidence that suggests that as humans we are capable of passing our unresolved anxiety through our DNA to generations of offspring.
The questions we must ask ourselves are; how do we resolve these biological alterations; how do we prevent unsustainable patterns in our psychological and physiological self; can we break the pattern of inherited anxiety; are there tools and methods available for every human (no matter living environment, economic status, cultural identification, sexual identity, age, and physical ability) that can assist in resolving symptoms of stress that affect our bodies; can we essentially learn to self regulate our own biological systems in order to create resiliency, self control, and self reliance before, during and after a traumatic event? To some, the answers to these questions might come as a surprise.
Through yoga, movement stretching, shape building, breathing exercises, bodywork, introception, mindfulness, self-enquiry and meditation, restorative healthy living within the body is absolutely possible. However, identifying trigger responses to traumatic life circumstances, understanding why and how they affect our lives according to our anatomical make up, and accessing these tools and methods of healing and resiliency can be a daunting task. We are honoured to bring a course that will address all of these questions and more.

A Certificate in Trauma Informed Yoga will be available upon completion of additional home study hours.
Additional home study hours include a book review from one book on the provided resources list and a detailed lesson plan for a Trauma Informed Yoga Series focusing on a specific community of your choice. These must be turned in within 6 months of completing this training. This certificate also counts as part of the Legacy Motion Movement Based Resiliency Community Facilitator Training. If you are interested in becoming a Legacy Motion MBR Community Facilitator, more details will be given on the final day of this training.

Kirsten (Kaye) Wilkinson

Kirsten considers herself a child of the Universe, calling home wherever her teddy bear happens to be. She holds a Masters Degree in Dance and Research from American University in Washington, DC and a BA in Dance and Kinesiology from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Kirsten is the Founder and Executive Director of Legacy Motion, an American based non profit committed to promoting resilience, empowerment, trauma resolution, psychosocial coexistence, community and peace building through restorative, movement based practices.
Her professional dance career spans over 10 years during which she performed with such companies as The San Francisco Ballet, David Dorfman and Heidelberg Ballet. She has held positions at The Library of Congress, Dance Heritage Coalition, and various adjunct professorships at American University Cairo, University of Oregon, University of Hawaii and many more. After much physical trauma sustained in a car accident, she has found sanctuary in her yoga practice and teaching. She is a certified Hot Yoga and 200YTT yoga instructor with thousands of hours teaching moving bodies. Kirsten’s training comes from a broad background including Alexander Technique, LabanNotation, Dance Therapy, TCTSY, and Mind/Body Therapy. She is also the Director of International Programs at BodyWise Foundation.
Tiago likes to see himself as an "explorer of life", as he understands life as discovering and recognizing what we are and everything around us. He studied and worked as a communication consultant, but discovered in Ayurvedic medicine and in Yoga a different way of Being in life. He has been teaching yoga for over a decade and has been practicing since 2005. Learning from various teachers and in different traditions, he has built a broad, free and simple view of what yoga proposes and how it can be approached and practiced in different ways.
With deep gratitude and reverence to all his teachers and to the teachers of his teachers, he continues to study annually in Portugal, Spain and India. He has been teaching in Portugal, Spain, Israel, India and Indonesia for love and dedication to everyone's life and well-being.
Yoga teacher and bodyworker, Katrin has always been interested in the body and movement. After many years of dance, her Scoliosis lead her to Pilates and finally to Yoga and Thai Massage, which then became her path in life. For her it’s about the never ending discovery of body and mind, to deepen the awareness and to release all tension and stagnation. Only then, the journey towards healing and transformation can begin, the capacity and power of resilience of the body can grow, and more space for positive life energy and joy can develop.
She holds a 500h Level 4 NVQ Yoga Teaching qualification, trained in Manual Lymph Drainage and has studied extensively in Thai Yoga Massage and Osteothai, including a Master Osteothai qualification, over the past years. She used to run a Yoga Festival in London and launched an online anti-stress breathing programme. Since 2015 Katrin lives in Lisbon and co-runs Little Yoga Space, where she teaches and gives Osteothai treatments, and is the director of Hadadi School of Thai Yoga Massage, offering foundation and advanced training courses worldwide.
