Chavutti Thirumal / Massagem Chavutti Thirumal

Chavutti Thirumal Massage may be the one of the best massages you will ever experience. Originating in the Kalaripayattu martial arts tradition of southern India, this treatment has been used for millennia to maintain and increase strength, flexibility and mobility. On a physical level, it can be used to tone and fortify the tissues, relieve muscular tension, improve circulation and promote inch-loss. Energetically, it is balancing, inviting deep relaxation and vitality in equal measure.

Using a rope for balance and weight distribution, the whole body is massaged with the feet - one foot is always in contact with the floor while the other foot slides and glides over and around the contours of the body. The pressure and strokes vary throughout the treatment including long strokes from head to toe which tend to be slow and deep to encourage tense knotted tissues to soften effortlessly, as well as lighter more vigorous friction strokes in specific areas to encourage increased circulation and release. As such, the massage is equally relaxing and energising, and the rhythmic fluid quality brings a sense of wholeness and integration.

This massage requires strength, flexibility, sensitivity and technique on the part of the therapist but ultimately it is an art; over time Michelle has developed the same sensitivity in her feet that she has in her hands. By nature, it’s a deeper massage so ideal for people who are in good health and who are open to experiencing something totally different. Due to the larger surface area of the feet, there is rarely any post-massage soreness and clients say they feel more lightness and freedom in body and mind after treatment.

Michelle fell in love with this treatment when she lived in London and used to receive it regularly from a Kalari master called Sanjay. She's been working as a massage therapist since 2002, trained in Chavutti Thirumal with Helen Noakes in 2017 (shown in the video), and it’s a joy to give this amazing and unique treatment to others.
