Death meditation
Death meditation is a practice that involves contemplating death, either through a visual exercise or as part of a spiritual journey. In death meditation, we use a focused mindset to reflect on what the death of our physical body means to us and how it can help us live more fully.
Death mediation is an ancient practice. Atisha, a Buddhist scholar, first created the practice in the 11th century. Currently you might have heard about this through the work of Zen Buddhist teacher Joan Halifax.
It’s important to understand that death meditation (like all types of meditation) is a practice; it’s like building muscle. And there’s nothing to achieve or to perform. It’s about creating awareness and gaining new insights and information from each session.

Benefits
It’s a tool to become familiar and intimate with the endings of our physical body; our skin, organs, lifeforce, and our breath. It can help us better appreciate the present moment and be more mindful of our time. Death meditation can also help us come to terms with our mortality and that of those around us and find peace and acceptance. In short, it helps us with our life here and now, to live it more fully and deeply.
The specific mediation series is called the Nine Contemplations of Dying. It takes us through nine contemplations that cover the elements that make us reflect on what is important to us in light of our mortality. At this session, we will practise one of the Contemplations of Dying.
The session involves gentle movement, breathwork and the biggest chunk is the death meditation. We will close with a sharing on the experience.

What other people say
Myrthe held a session for my girlfriend and I around the first contemplation of death, a mutually interesting topic for the both of us. She was a wonderful mentor and guide and provided a really safe space for us to explore this topic together through breathing, grounding practices, and meditation. The environment was intimate and we left the session feeling very connected to ourselves, and each other and with more curiosity to lean into this topic.

Facilitator Myrthe Peters
Myrthe is a certified birth & end of life doula, offering people choice and companionship during life’s most significant transitions. The end-of-life space is one of her biggest passions, and she firmly believes that embracing this particular space as an entire chapter opens up a whole new life experience.
She creates a safe space for individuals and groups to explore and experience death & dying, grief & loss. This space is characterised by total transparency, bridge-building between the medical world and our human experience, and simple ways to integrate new perspectives. Altered states of consciousness act as a powerful catalyst for healing, becoming familiar with death & grief, and, therefore, living more fully. Additionally, as a private psilocybin facilitator working with this plant medicine takes an important place in her end-of-life doula work. Through psilocybin she supports people in remembering their own unique healing powers and working through grieving processes on a deep level. More info: https://www.fullcircledoula.org |
